The idea to form Supporters of Luton Youth Development (SoLYD), was based on a concept successfully introduced by Norwich City in 1996, allowing supporters to raise funds independently, for the specific purpose of improving the production line of young players for the football club.
In September 2008 Luton Town were approached by ex-player, Kingsley Black, and lifelong supporter, Justin Hammond, who offered their time to help support the club's successful Youth Development project. The group's long term aim is to secure land to build a training complex for the club's young players.
After talking to each of the club's three supporters groups, the following volunteers, representing the whole spectrum of Luton Town fans, agreed to help launch the project:
Paul King
Simon Gibbs
Kevin Barrett
Yvonne Fletcher
Gareth Lemin
Tony Murray
Gill Hicks
Mick McGonnell
Following the club's unfortunate relegation from League Two, the short term aim of the group is to raise funds to help make up the Youth Development department's short fall in funding from the Football League. The long term aim remains to help secure a facility in Luton for the club's youth development to bring through the next Matthew Upson or Curtis Davies.
The project will be launched at the pre-season friendly versus a Manchester United XI on July 28th 2009. For more details of how to join the project please monitor this web-site in the run in to the game!
